Thoughts on cake sculpting as an art form.

Not long ago, in reference to cake sculpting, I ran across a response to a blog post that said “if it doesn’t last more than three hours, it isn’t art.” I suppose everyone has their own idea of what art is, or isn’t.
For example; years ago, when 3D art was really starting to take off, I purchased a piece from an artist for a couple bucks to use as desktop wallpaper. I liked the work, so I supported him. Well, at that time I worked with a guy who told me computer art isn’t real art and I just wasted my money. Okay, so he didn’t like the fact it wasn’t tangible, I get it. However, this was two days after he had rented a couple movies, something he paid $4 each, got entertained for a couple hours, and then had to return the items… keeping nothing.
Hey, at least I got to keep mine.
Fortunately, most rational people consider cake sculpting just as much art as sculpting in clay, painting a canvas, or creating a large mural. Some people go so far as to call it “fine art” that shouldn’t be destroyed. How many times have people said “I can’t cut into that!” I’m not sure about the longevity of a cake sitting on a shelf as decoration, but I understand.

The slew of programming, from how-to videos to reality tv on cake sculpting, has brought a lot of people to appreciate the art, many who never really gave it thought in the past. Although, as a disclaimer, the excessive drama portrayed in some of this programing isn’t necessarily ideal, I’m just saying.
As for myself, I can’t deny the artistic value of a good cake sculpture. I’m not a baker myself, I fully admit this. I might get by if the cake comes from a box, but even then, no promises. When I was younger, art was a part of my life with pencil and charcoal, later started learning film. So, I certainly value art, but me and ovens don’t always get along.
They laugh at me, it’s very sad.
My sister, however, Melissa Bailey, is the baker in the family. Matter of fact, she’s a cake sculptor who happens to be very good at what she does. She started her cake art under her business name Edible Artistry Custom Cakes, where she put her skills to the test and fine-tuned her art by doing custom cakes for events. Although she loves doing events, she has a heart for teaching and sharing her art with others.
This is why she is changing her business to The Maine Cake and reinventing the whole model, which includes a community with courses, both live and prepackaged. It will also include recipe magazines with full color recipes.

The Maine Cake is an upcoming cake art community with shows, live classes, courses, recipes, games, and more.
Cake sculpting is a fascinating art form, taking a food item and turning it into something many people don’t want to eat. There’s a negative way to accomplish that as well, I know, but we’re talking about a positive way…through a piece of art.
